JCI Makati Supports 4th Year Anniversary of “A Journey of Hope: Education Under the Bridge”

On November 23, 2017, JCI Makati joined Teacher Fe Matullano Lustanas as she celebrated the 4thyear of her advocacy “A Journey of Hope: Education Under the Bridge.” Over 50 kids in the Bulungan Area in La Huerta, Paranaque City were treated to a morning of fun, games, entertainment and learning. JCI Makati was joined by over 20 volunteers from Voice of the Youth Network, The Microphone Club, Kids Learning Plus and Prima Center for Creative Excellence.

After the opening prayer led by one of the pupils, Teacher Fe welcomed everyone to the celebration. She gave a quick rundown of the activities lined up for the morning. Soon after, the volunteer teachers from Prima Center for Creative Excellence facilitated a quick game of jigsaw puzzle, and gave prizes to the group of kids who finished their puzzle first. The kids were then given the chance to showcase their talents, play games and listen to children’s stories in a breakout session with the volunteers.

The kids then gathered together to hear some inspirational words from JCI Makati 2018 President, Pocholo “The VoiceMaster” Gonzales, who is also a highly sought-after Filipino motivational speaker. Pocholo easily caught the kids’ attention when he started doing character voices, and went on to inspire the kids by telling the story of how he started his journey to being the VoiceMaster. He encouraged them to dream big and not let their circumstance define their destiny.

In the afternoon, Pocholo also inspired select Grade 4 and 5 students of La Huerta Elementary School, together with Ate Ada from Voice of the Youth Network, Kuya Thoto from The Microphone Club and Kuya Elmar from Kids Learning Plus. Pocholo also gave the kids the opportunity to exhibit their skills in storytelling and voice acting.

Teacher Fe’s advocacy is to provide education to the underprivileged children who live under the bridge in the said area. Together with her husband and some volunteer teachers, she would visit the children every week and teach them various school subjects, values and even personal hygiene. Her advocacy soon gained popularity as it caught the attention of media networks, where Teacher Fe has been featured in recognition of her noble work. Education Under the Bridge also won her the Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Pilipinong Guro Award in 2015.
